  • New Website Launched to Oppose Weddington Building Plans

A dedicated website has been launched to support a campaign by residents of Weddington, Nuneaton opposing plans to build a housing estate on historic green fields. The campaign is calling itself S.W.O.R.D – Save Weddington: Oppose the Residential Development, and the website is at: http://www.saveweddington.org.uk.

The SWORD website has been set up as a source of information about the proposals and how local people can oppose them. Hallam Land Management Limited are proposing to build a huge estate of up to 333 houses on the remaining fields – the site of a historical medieval village – between Church Lane and the Weddington Walk.

The website argues that this will have a devastating effect upon the area in many ways including: destruction of wildlife and flora in Weddington’s fields; increased traffic along both Weddington Road and Church Lane; increased pressure on sewerage systems risking another pipe burst, as happened in January near to Weddington Post Office, and major disturbance caused by flooding (the proposed site is on the River Anker floodplain).

John Brookes, the website developer said: “I have been overwhelmed by the level of support I have received since setting up the site. I have had hundreds of visits to the site in the past week alone, and volunteers have been going out in the freezing weather to deliver over 2500 cards locally to promote the website and the campaign. This really shows the breadth and the depth of opposition to these plans. A residents’ meeting that I went to recently was standing room only.

“This is not a case of NIMBYism – what we are saying is that there are far more suitable brown field sites in the area which could be developed, rather than destroying our few remaining historic green fields. This is the thin end of the wedge – other green areas in Nuneaton will be threatened too.”
